Every year, businesses and organisations from around Cornwall descend on the Headland Hotel in Newquay for recognition of all the hard work they put in to sustainability. Former Green Project Co-ordinator Stephen Murphy and FXU were shortlisted for two awards – Best Individual and Greatest Contribution Towards Creating a Sustainable Food Economy. Though FXU missed out on the latter to the deserved winners Bosavern Community Farm, Stephen Murphy took home the Best Individual award for all the hard work he did with FXU.

Early Members of the Green Living Project

For two years, Stephen was employed to embed an ethos of sustainability amongst students and staff at Penryn and Falmouth Campuses. Thus, the Green Living Project was born. Under the Green Living Project, he started a campus-wide composting scheme, revived the Homegrown Society, ran weekly farmstalls and led campaigns on reducing waste and energy consumption. Through his work, he improved the university experience of countless students from a range of courses, giving them valuable experience and inspiring sustainable change. There were also massive benefits to the wider community, with a local currency experiment injecting almost £15,000 into local, sustainable businesses.

All at FXU would like to extend a massive thank you for all the hard work he put into the role, and a huge congratulations for the well-deserved award. We couldn’t be happier that all the amazing things Stephen has done have been recognised, and we wish him all the luck in the world on his future endeavours.
