Do you want to cuddle dogs? Of course you do!
K9 Crusaders Dog Welfare is a charity based in Bissoe (6 miles from Penryn Campus) and is always in need of more help. If you’re interested in animal behaviour and welfare or you just want an excuse to get outside, there’ll be something for you to do.
Volunteering at the shelter will mostly involve exercising and entertaining the dogs, grooming, cleaning the kennels and maintaining the site, but there are also opportunities to get involved in fundraising and outreach, such as at the dog shows and fayres that the charity regularly hosts.
It’s a great way to relieve stress, meet new people and improve your confidence in a lively environment, as well as being good physical exercise.
You won’t need any specific skills to work with the dogs, however whilst in your training period you will need to commit to weekly training with your mentor on the same day every week. Training can take 6+ sessions with your mentor, it is time-consuming for staff so it's important you only apply for training if you have a genuine interest in completing it and continue to volunteer independently.
Both Falmouth and Exeter students are welcome, the dogs won’t care!
It would be helpful if you have your own transport, but don’t worry if you don’t as car shares or taxis can be arranged. Due to funding, it is only affordable if taxis are booked for groups of 3+ students so it's best if you can form a group that trains on the same day each week.
If you’re genuinely interested in volunteering, you will need to email the K9 team (email above). If you are eligible for the project, you will be given an application form. Once this has been processed you will be invited for an induction (please contact project leaders if you require transport for this), after which you will work with a mentor so that you can get a better understanding of how the site works.
We have weekly taxi's organised, these are for training sessions once you have completed your induction, they can be booked through this page and cost £2 for both ways.
Please join our face book group where we will be posting updates 'K9 Crusaders FXU Volunteering Project'.
