Wave Project Student Volunteers (WPSV) is the student arm of the Wave Project – an award-winning charity changing lives through surfing – that aims to increase student participation in mentorship across Cornwall.

The Wave Project (Registered Charity Number: 1163421) has developed an intervention that uses local surfers to help disadvantaged and vulnerable young people reduce anxiety and improve emotional health. The sessions are delivered by a mix of paid staff and volunteer surf-mentors who work in partnership with established surf schools on six-week courses across the country. Most importantly, sessions are free of any pressure to succeed – clients work at their own pace and achieve their own goals. They can work 1:1 with their mentor, or get more involved with the group.

Our ethos is to be totally client-led. The role of the surf mentor is to encourage and enable, not to push clients towards an arbitrary goal. We have found that this approach reduces anxiety and allows clients to feel empowered, enabling them to overcome challenges and develop a sense of pride in their achievements. The Wave Project depends on a team of fantastic volunteer surf mentors, who help clients in the water and give them confidence and encouragement. WPSV not only serves to act as an intermediary between student volunteers and the charity but also aims to give something back to its volunteers. We can provide free training in first aid, safeguarding, autism awareness and mental health awareness as well as the occasional film night on campus.
