FXU Advice Service
FXU Advice Service - primary role
FXU Advice Service’s primary role is to deliver free, confidential, impartial advice and guidance to all University of Exeter Cornwall Campus and Falmouth University students. The FXU Advice Service can do this by reason of it being independent of both universities.
What type of advice does the Service provide?
The advice encompasses a range of legal and University-related issues including:
- Money matters – e.g. grant/loan entitlement, bursaries, University hardship funds, emergency loans, budgeting, debt, welfare benefits
- Housing - rights and responsibilities
- Employment– e.g. income tax, national insurance
- Consumer rights
- University-related issues – e.g. academic appeals, complaints, disciplinary issues, fitness to study, extenuating circumstances, intermitting, withdrawing
What we’re not
FXU’s Advice Service is staffed with trained expert advisers, but does not run a counselling service. Students requiring counselling or other emotional support should seek support from Student Support Services.

Student Support Services
There are many support networks available to you as a student, some you will know about and others you might not realise! Here is a list of all that is available to you as a student that you can use to help you through the tough times when you need them the most. They are friendly, approachable and gifted at their jobs. Support, information, advice and specialist services
Student Services provide a range of support, information and specialist services and are here to support you through your studies in every way we can. Services are available on both campuses and are free, confidential and friendly.
The Compass - Ask a question, find what you need, use your Compass. The Compass is a first port of call. Visit our portal compass.fxplus.ac.uk to access our frequently asked questions to find the information you need or log an enquiry and we will find the answer for you.
Living Support will advise and assist you on all sorts of issues such as student life, academic issues, housing, living in the community, personal relationships and general worries. If you need to understand your options, are concerned about your own welfare or the welfare and behaviour of others around you, then get in touch; we’re here for you.
Accessibility and Dyslexia Skills
Accessibility Advisors provide advice and support for students with disabilities, physical, sensory, mental health and long term health conditions and those with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) including Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. They also advise students on eligibility for claiming Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). Dyslexia Skills can help you to develop better study skills and learn the way that suits you best. They can also show you how to get the most out of apps and assistive software.
Our Wellbeing workers are here to support students experiencing anxiety, stress and other mental health problems and promote wellbeing across the student community.
Counsellors offer you a safe space to explore things that are troubling you. Your counsellor will respect your confidentiality; they will not give advice or judge you but will work alongside you to find your way forward.
All students are advised to register with a local GP practice. Students living on the Penryn Campus or in Penryn itself can register with Penryn Surgery so that they can use the on campus clinics which are run in Tremough Annexe. Registration forms and a list of GP providers are available from us.
Multifaith Chaplaincy provides spiritual and emotional support to all students and staff of all faiths and none. They have strong links with the local faith communities and can connect you to other like-minded people on and off campus. Located at Tremough Barton Cottages; there is also an Oasis Room set aside for quiet time, meditation and prayer.
The Day Nursery at the Falmouth campus provides high quality care and education for children aged 1-3 and 3-5 years in a safe and stimulating environment to enable you to study with peace of mind. A new purpose built Nursery will open on the Penryn Campus in September 2016. Parents/carers who are interested in putting their child on a waiting list can contact firstname.lastname@example.org.

Mind is a mental health charity dedicated to providing supportive and reliable information to those experiencing mental health problems. Mind aim to empower you to understand your own condition and the choices available to you.

NHS 111 is the 24-hour NHS non-emergency number run by a team of advisors, supported by experienced nurses and paramedics. It is fast and free and should be used when you need medical help quickly, but it is not a life-threatening situation.

PAPYRUS is the national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide. It operates HOPELineUK, a confidential helpline for young people with thoughts of suicide or those concerned about a young person who may have thoughts of suicide. HOPELineUK is staffed by trained professionals and offers a phone, text and email service. PAPYRUS also offers training, including Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) for anyone over the age of 16 and delivers regional outreach and community programmes with young people.

Rethink is dedicated to helping those diagnosed with mental health problems understand and manage their illness. It provides information around symptoms, medication and your rights. SANE is a UK wide charity that works to improve the quality of life of those affected by mental illness and the people who support them. As well as a helpline, SANE runs various web-based forums for people to support each other. Support Line provides a confidential telephone helpline and website offering emotional support information and advice to any individual on any issue, from mental health problems and abuse to volunteering and internet safety .
