Following extensive consultation with the FXU Students’ Union and the Student Guild at the University of Exeter, students, staff and academics, we are pleased to announce there will be significant improvements to the library loan period and fines policy for library materials. These changes will be in place for the new academic year in September 2015.

The consultation has shown that most people prefer to have a longer loan period, and in response the library has extended the standard loan period for both students and staff.

On a standard book loan, undergraduate and postgraduate students will be able to borrow books up to a maximum of 6 weeks and only recalled items will shorten these loan periods.

From September 2015, Library fines will only apply to overdue recalled items and overdue high demand items. The 7 day loan period will only come into effect if an item is recalled, to ensure that the request can be satisfied within a reasonable time frame. The new standard loan period applies to the majority of stock, with the exception of high demand collections.

Fines for overdue recalled items and overdue high demand loans are 50p per day, per item, up to a maximum of £5 per item.

To launch the new policy, all fines will be cleared from existing student accounts with the exception of any replacement costs or Inter Library Loan renewal charges, which will still need to be paid.
