Did you know: composting at home for just one year can save global warming gases equivalent to all the CO2 your kettle produces annually. When waste is sent to landfill, air cannot get to the organic waste. Therefore as the waste breaks down it create methane which damages the Earth's atmosphere. However, when this same waste is composted above ground, oxygen helps the waste to decompose aerobically which means hardly any methane is produced, which is good news for the planet.

At the Penryn campus, we are one of the few universities to compost food waste from student accommodation. In the past year and a half, our team of student volunteers, “the Wasters”, have diverted over 16 tonnes of food waste from landfill – a truly remarkable amount.

The Wasters are now recruiting new members to help with the weekly collections. As a Waster, you’ll meet every Wednesday afternoon at the allotments and push a shopping trolley around Glasney Village picking up full compost caddies and dropping off empty ones outside each flat. You’ll then take all the lovely food waste up to the allotments, empty and wash the caddies and put them into storage for the next week. In exchange for your work, you’ll get a bag full of delicious, organic & locally grown vegetables.

If you’re interested in joining the team, please contact Daniel.perlaki@fxplus.ac.uk.
