Arts for Health - Reading with Patients - Calling for volunteers for new project in Falmouth Hospital

There is now a growing body of evidence to support the view that stimulation via reading and conversational interaction stimulates the brain, and via this the rehabilitation and recovery of the patient is improved.  Many patients can spend hours in a bed with little stimulation and interaction with others.

Arts for Health Cornwall are keen to develop a reading project within Community Hospitals, whereby volunteers, following an induction session with a trained story teller, read to the patients in their hospital wards.  It is planned that the volunteer will read to the patients on a one to one basis but it maybe that reading to a group is preferable in some areas. It is envisaged that the time commitment will be about an hour per week.

The initial reading project is planned for Falmouth Hospital to start early in 2008.  If you are interested in volunteering for this project please contact Jenny on 01872 274592 or e mail jenny@artsforhealthcornwall.org.uk.
