FXU Rag! (Raising & Giving)Are you interested in raising money for local charities, going on RAG-raids, shaking money-boxes in your pyjamas, holding jumble sales or strange events to help those in need? let me know which causes you would like to raise for and how you'd like to go about it and I will help with insurance, licences and all that malarky.. FXU Rag volunteers recently raised over £600 for the RBL Poppy Appeal, by dressing in red and hitting the streets of Truro (for just 2 hours!)! - that is how easy it is to make a big difference to the lives of others. Contact me, Jill, on communityaction@fxu.org.uk or 01326 25363, with your ideas
OUr next RAG event is a: Help the Aged - Charity Collection Saturday 28 Feb (outside B&Q Penryn)let me know if you're interested: communityaction@fxu.org.uk ShelterBox - local volunteer opportunities for disaster relief worldwideThe ShelterBox Trust is a registered UK charity (based in Cornwall) that provides emergency aid for victims of natural and other disasters anywhere in the world. Our solution to disasters in the ShelterBox - a tough, green plastic box containing a 10-person tent and ancilliary equipment designed to enable a family of up to 10 people survive for at least six months. Other items in the box may include insulated ground sheets, thermal blankets, a multi-fuel stove, cooking equipment, tools, mosquito nets, water containers etc. Since operations began in January 2001, we have now helped around 500,000 people and worked in more than 30 different countries - responding to earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, wars, volcanoes etc. How you can help:Volunteers are crucial to the work of ShelterBox - without them we would not be able to function. At our Cornwall HQ we have many regular helpers who work in the warehouse, getting equipment ready for the next pack. Others work in the office, help assemble school packs etc. The need for help varies enormously due to the nature of our work! The best way to offer your help as a volunteer is to complete a volunteer form! where you can state when and how often you would be able to help. You can collect a form from Jill at the FXU, or email communityaction@fxu.org.uk. For further information on volunteering with ShelterBox, please contact info@shelterbox.org or call 01326 569782.
LEARN, LISTEN, GROW, CHANGE, VOLUNTEER - SAMARITANSChange someones life by giving just a few hours of your time each monthListening volunteers support the majority of our service but there are many other volunteering opportunities with the Samaritans. Volunteers also provide publicity and fundraising for our branches and ensure that administrative and maintenance tasks are carried out to further support our work. Full and intensive training is provided free of charge. Currently there are 18,200 Samaritan Volunteers in 203 branches operating in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. In 2002 Samaritans received 4.6 million calls - that's a call made every 7 seconds. Samaritan volunteers are available 24 hours a day to provide emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.
