Karate Sandokai Karate Karate is a martial art from Okinawa which was originally a highly effective system of unarmed combat designed to protect it's practitioners and their loved ones from armed assailants and thugs. Over the centuries a sport and fitness aspect evolved which enabled the art to be taught in schools and to a wider audience. Many martial arts focus on the sporting aspects and are constrained by rules. Though Karate also has a sporting side, the practical application of the techniques are true to the original "unarmed combat" systems, and as such there are no illegal or forbidden techniques and no rules other than "never fight if you can avoid doing so, but if you do fight second place is not an option". Karate involves a range of strikes using different parts of the body as weapons. The emphasis is on the development of skill, not brute force. When and where to hit is just as important as how to hit. This means that a diligent student can excel in Karate irrespective of their physical makeup. The Chief Instructor, Robin Whale, was a member of the first martial arts club in Cornwall in the late 1960s, and has been teaching Karate in Cornwall since 1978. Apart from being one of the highest ranked black belts in the South West, he has a B.Sc.(Hons) in Psychology and a Cert.Ed. (Certificate in Education). Robin, and all of the Sandokai Karate instructors, hold current First Aid certificates, are fully insured and have had CRB checks and are Police registered Karate Instructors. The longest journey starts with but a single step. Take that step now and drop in to any of the Sandokai Karate clubs. You will be made to feel most welcome.
