While You're Out:

  • Never leave drinks unattended in pubs & clubs. Cover the tops of bottles with your thumb or use a spikey. Men’s drinks can be drugged too!
  • If you suspect that your drink has been drugged, tell a member of staff or trusted friend immediately.
  • Plan how you’re going to get home, arrange a taxi or get a lift with a friend.
  • Tell your friends if you are going home early, especially if it means leaving someone behind alone.
  • Arrange to meet friends in a busy place and have an exact time to meet.
  •  If out with flatmates, each take a key in case you are separated.
  • Walk facing oncoming traffic, to avoid vehicles pulling up alongside you from behind.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid using MP3 players or mobile phones - you might not hear trouble approaching if wearing earphones.

Mobile Phone Advice:

  • Don’t leave your phone where thieves can see it, or use it in places where you think it could be stolen & always lock the keypad with a pin number.
  • Mark your phone by writing your home postcode and house number on it using an ultra violet pen. This will help the police to return it to you if it is found. Remember to re apply the marking as UV does fade.
  • If anyone asks to use your phone in an emergency, dont give it to them. If neccessary, make the call for them.

Laptop Security:

  • Laptops are small and light making them convenient to use,but also easy to steal. Do not leave your laptop unattended at any time.
  • Avoid using your laptop in public, but if you have to, be aware of who is around you.
  • Carry your laptop out of sight, in a bag/case & use the shoulder strap
  • If you are confronted in the street and asked for your laptop, shout for help and attract attention, but do not put yourself in danger.
  • Marking your laptop conspicuously might not prevent a theft, but it may deter an offender and assist police in returning it if it is found
  • Do not leave your laptop on show in a car, even if you are in the car with it.
