► Academic Representation

Academic Representation

FXU are involved in representing students in academic issues in a number of ways:

FXU Presidents representing students

FXU Presidents represent students on a number of committees and boards such as the University College Falmouth Academic Board and Learning, Teaching and Access Committee; the University of Exeter Uni-Guild Liaison Group, UoECC Student-Staff-Liaison Committee.

Linking with the course rep system (University College Falmouth) and Student-Staff-Liaison-Committees (University of Exeter Cornwall Campus)

Essentially, the course reps (UCF) and SSLC’s (UECC), have the same role for UCF and UECC respectively. As they relate to the separate institutions, they simply have different names and are organised slightly differently by each institution. However, both systems elect a student rep from each year/level of each course. UCF Course reps sit on Course Committees that take place twice a year. UECC SSLC meetings occur at least once a term. Students have the opportunity to to raise issues with academic staff and provide student feedback to those staff.

The FXU President UECC is a member of all Cornwall Campus SSLC’s and regularly attends. The FXU President UCF keeps up to date with all Course Committees by reading up on the minutes (there are many more of these than SSLCs so it is too difficult attend them all). The Presidents can then support students in these systems and take action when appropriate.

Students are encouraged to raise any academic issues they have through their school/subject rep, some of whom will be representing students on both a Course Committee/ SSLC as well as the FXU Student Council. To find out who the student rep is for your course/year group and for information on these meetings, the following weblinks should help (or just come and ask at FXU or your universities academic office/support unit):

UoE SSLC's - links/more info will be posted here shortly.

Equality and Diversity webpages - please see to help undertake the role of a student representative showing committment to equality and diversity. http://intranet.falmouth.ac.uk/html/equalitydiversity/ (for UCF students as need to be on the UCF network to access this page)and http://learningspace.falmouth.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=461 (for all students).

Student Council

Even though the Course Committees and SSLC’s are the first point of call for academic issues, students can also bring academic issues to FXU Student Council if they feel they are not satisfied with the response or if they feel that students in other schools/subjects would be interested (this of course can be good practice as well as dissatisfaction). It is also a way to collectively take action with other students to have more of an impact in changing something that is affecting yours or fellow students' experience.

Individually in Academic Appeals/Complaints/Misconduct

FXU can provide advice and support for students in academic appeals, complaints or misconduct. Please see our Advice webpage for details or contact the FXU President respective to your institution if you would like support or for more details.
